LOS ANGELES – On the first day of Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, U.S. Senate Candidate Kevin de León released the following statement:

“As Judge Kavanaugh’s hearing began today, Senator Kamala Harris’ motion to adjourn the hearing sparked hope for me and all Americans who fear the damage Brett Kavanaugh could do to our hard-won civil and human rights. This was a moment of truth.

“But that hope turned to disappointment as I watched senior Ranking Committee Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) squander our moment, bowing to tradition and reading her opening statement – playing straight into the Republicans’ hands. Perhaps she has forgotten the constituents she has left behind in California.

"I understand Senate procedures better than most; I served as leader of the California Senate. If the Republicans want to jam through a nominee under a flawed and corrupt process, Democrats have every right to fight or refuse to participate. Other Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee did exactly what they should have. The blame lies squarely at the feet of their leader – if the senior, Ranking Member plays along as she did during the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch, she will pave the Republicans an easy path to victory.

“So my disappointment has turned to outrage. Complicity and capitulation will not shield essential human rights from Donald Trump and the Republican enablers marauding on Capitol Hill. I would sooner walk out into the streets and protest with people we represent than remain in that Senate chamber where diplomatic bluster is worth less than the paper the members’ talking points are printed on. We deserve better because too much is at stake.”
