LOS ANGELES, CA – Tom Torlakson, former science teacher and California’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction, today endorsed Kevin de León in his campaign for U.S. Senate.
“California needs a leader in Washington who knows our education system inside and out, because in this global economy, we can’t afford to set our students up for failure,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. “Since we met as colleagues in the Assembly, Kevin has stayed true to the beliefs forged by his experience as an English as a Second Language instructor and as an education advocate. Investing in our future is a necessity, not an option. No one in the Senate will fight to invest in our students the way Kevin de León has proven he will, and that’s why he’s earned my wholehearted endorsement.”
As leader of the California Senate, Kevin de León eliminated fees for the first year of community college, established the College Access Tax Credit, and increased awards that help nearly 197,000 low-income California college students with the peripheral costs of college. Senator de León has pledged to build on those accomplishments in Washington, DC, where he will call for tuition-free public higher education and policies that reduce burdens beyond tuition, such as housing costs and high student loan interest rates.
“From Calexico to Crescent City, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the state who is more invested in the future of our students than Tom Torlakson,” de León said. “Tom and I agree: it’s time to end the neglect of our nation’s students by Washington politicians and give every single student an equal opportunity to succeed. An economy that works for all of California’s working families can be only built on the bedrock of a strong, equitable, public education system. We’ve blazed a remarkable trail for education policy here in California, and I’m committed to keeping Congress on that trail as they chart our course in future years.”
Just last week, Kevin de León released the video “Our Resistance”. To watch the video, click here or on the screenshot below.
California State Senator Kevin de León was elected by his colleagues to lead the Senate in 2014, making him the first Latino to hold that position in over a century. Through his ambitious approach to policymaking, Senator de León has authored groundbreaking legislation on a variety of issues that have become national models. De León served four years in the California State Assembly before his election to the State Senate in 2010.
