LOS ANGELES, CA – U.S. Senate candidate Kevin de León today released the following statement ahead of Gina Haspel’s confirmation hearing this morning:

“There are just five questions I would ask President Trump’s choice to lead the Central Intelligence Agency:

1.    Is torture ever justified?

2.    Would you destroy evidence again in order to protect the CIA from congressional review?

3.    Why did you destroy evidence instead of resign?

4.    What was the closest you ever came to resigning because of inappropriate orders given to you?

5.    Was it appropriate for the CIA to launch an “influence campaign” to get you confirmed?

"America’s regrettable history with torture cannot be dismissed with claims of ‘following orders.’ Ms. Haspel’s ties to torture are unacceptable, and it is incumbent upon our leaders in Washington, D.C. to ensure our nation never sinks into that dark place again.”

California State Senator Kevin de León was elected by his colleagues to lead the Senate in 2014, making him the first Latino to hold that position in over a century.  Through his ambitious approach to policymaking, Senator de León has authored groundbreaking legislation on a variety of issues that have become national models. De León served four years in the California State Assembly before his election to the State Senate in 2010.
